The Heart of Dixie. I have fired hundreds of 405 gr cast bullets over 27/5744 in 45-70 rifles of various types for years with outstanding results. This is a BP (or a little hotter) level load. Larger 5744 doses can be used for strong actions, but I usually go with other powders for stiff loads..

Reloader 7 for the heavier hunting loads and Unique for the fun loads that anyone can shoot. I recall that AA #5744 has .45-70 as one of the best calibers for this powder, why it was created. I have used it quite successfully in .30 cal's with cast boolits.But here's my take and experience on recoil in a 45-70 Contender. I've got 2 45-70 Contender barrels. Just back from a morning session at the range with the M94 32-40 and the Spfld Trapdoor carbine 45-70. Using Marshall's 350 Piledriver GC cast with 23.5 gr Alliant 2400, Rem 9 1/2 Primer and Rem brass, was clocking 1575.4 fps avg out of the 20" bbl and getting a 4" group at 100 yds with the original 1884 Buffington military iron sights.I have heard it is an accurate powder in the .45-70. One nice thing about the Varget and similar powders in the 45-70, you get 100% load density without high pressures. I have only used IMR 3031 and 2400 (mild loads) in the .45-70, but plan on doing more reloading and shooting with the caliber this summer.
